The canary is one of the prettiest birds that we place in an aviary. We usually will place a pair of canaries, but often
the male will not sing with a female. Because of this, on occasion we will only place a male. The average life span of
a canary is 10 years.
HOW TO TELL MALE FROM FEMALE:
Canaries are hard to sex. It is sometimes easy to distinguish the male from the singing. The male canaries are
better singers.
ORIGIN:
Canary Islands off the coast of Africa.
WHEN IS THE BIRD IN COLOR:
Canaries are in color all of the time.
BREEDING:
Most canaries do not breed in the aviary. This is because it is difficult to sex them, so getting a male and female are
often by luck. However, some aviaries will receive a pair that will be great breeders. Canaries require an open nest
for breeding and nesting. Incubation period for a canary will last 14 days and the fledgling occurs about 14 days later.
DIET:
The canary eats seeds and greens and requires egg food through the breeding period.
